Sergio CanamasasSergio Canamasas had a great GP2 race today at Monza (Italy), managing to gain four positions from the 18th place he started to finish 14th. The Spaniard got as high as ninth at one point in the race.

After a very good first lap, Sergio was in 12th position, staying there until the pit stop when a sticky wheel nut meant that he lost around five seconds. Despite this problem Canamasas was really strong when he returned to the track, setting the fastest lap of the race on the 10th lap while recovering time until he made contact with the group that was battling for the eighth position that would mean starting from the pole position for tomorrow’s race. Sadly, in the last 8 laps, his tyres gave up so he lost contact to finish in the aforementioned 14th place.

Tomorrow, the Catalonian is starting from the seventh row of the grid with the target of getting into the top 8 and scoring his first points in the category.

Sergio Canamasas: “I started well, recovering several positions on the first lap. We decided to stop early for the tyre change but it wasn’t the right decision as at the end of the race the soft tyres went off and I couldn’t stay in the fight for the points. Additionally I also lost some time in the pit stop. Even though I’m happy with my race because my performance was good, in the first part of the race I was the fastest driver on track and I could recover the time lost in the pit. If the tyres had lasted to the end I’m sure I’d have finished in the points but the last five laps I was finding it hard to keep the car on the track so my only chance was to defend and forget about recovering any more positions. Tomorrow I’ve got a good chance of getting up to 8th position and
scoring my first GP2 point.”
