Jonathan Bomarito

Jonathan Bomarito got his first season Victory in the fourth race of the 2008 Cooper Tires Presents The Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda season at the Rexall Edmonton Indy doubleheader on Friday evening.

Driving the No. 26 Discount Tire machine for Mathiasen Motorsports, Bomarito stalked polesitter James Hinchcliffe throughout the race before making his move in Turn 1 with eight laps remaining to take the lead. A late full-course caution set up a one-lap shootout, but Bomarito managed to hold off a charging Markus Niemela to take the victory by 0.691 seconds. So far this Atlantic season the Californian, one of the most popular American Racers, was quickest in the final pre-season test session (his first with Mathiasen team) at MSR Houston, started on Pole in Long Beach and got a Championship Point for most improved positions in Mont-Tremblant. It was Bomarito’s third career Atlantic race victory and moved him from seventh to fourth in the championship standing s. It was also the first Atlantic victory for Mathiasen Motorsports, coming in the team’s 36th series start.

“The race was very difficult, but smooth in the same sense,” Bomarito said. “I had a decent start and from there, I was just kind of hanging onto the coattails of James (Hinchcliffe), letting him tow me around the track a bit and let things pan out till I was able to get past him. That was a nail-biter right there at the end to see that full-course caution come out. I think I had a two-second lead with five minutes to go or something like that and it was gone just like that but we managed to hold on for the win. Big thanks to the Mathiasen Motorsports team and (owners) Ray and Leslie (Mathiasen). I’m excited for everybody. I’m looking forward to getting more Poles and Podiums as the season continues so we can put the Discount Tire car at the top of the Championship. And I also wanted to thank Charles Barrett of the Speed Pro Agency for bringing Discount Tire on board for the season.”

“This is awesome news!” exclaimed Wirth. “There’s been a lot of extra work for everyone at the Atlantics this year since the Champ Car World Series merged with Indy Car. I know everyone’s been really busy trying to pull things together so we can have a fantastic run this year, but it hasn’t been easy. Thankfully, Mazda Motorsports has shown their commitment to our success and have been supporting the Atlantics staff in their efforts and things are starting to come together! I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors and supporters of the Atlantic Series, especially everyone that supports me in the #88 WIRSOL/SUEBA USA entry. Thank you for sticking with us and believing in the long history of the Atlantics – without your help we wouldn’t be racing! More than anything, I’m happy that these companies and investors will finally be rewarded with some of the exposure they deserve, and hopefully it’ll only get better.”

Andreas is also happy to announce that progress is being made elsewhere, and he encourages you to keep an eye out for his new website which is scheduled to be launched prior to his next race at Mont-Tremblant at the end of the month. “I’ll be glad when my new site finally goes live! The planning stages and work involved in this total re-build have taken much longer than we’d hoped, but I know all of the long hours and hard work will be worth it!” explained Andreas. “We’re going to have a lot of cool new features – downloadable autographs and wallpaper, a gallery full of photos right back to my early days in racing, news and appearance schedules that will be updated regularly – it’s going to be awesome! I’m also glad to tell you that more and more of my supporters are getting on board for the Racing Realities Prediction Contest! It’s growing so much that we’ve decided to award more than just one prize this year, including products from HiRev Skincare and UPR Racing Supply. Check out for all of the details and get your predictions in – it’s not too late to win, and I appreciate seeing my fans getting involved!”

Edoardo Piscopo finally made his choice for the 2008 Season. The Italian driver is set to enter next year’s Champ Car Atlantic Series, partnering with Eurointernational. The team owned by Antonio Ferrari, that gave Edoardo the chance to debut in the American Formula BMW, is a first timer in the series too. At the same time, Edoardo will continue his partnership with the Italian A1GP Team.

“I’m very excited to be back with Eurointernational, as they gave me the first opportunity to step up from go-kart racing. The team – directed by Antonio Ferrari – is also a second family to me. The Champ Car Atlantic series proved to feature an high-level competition, but I’m excited by the new challenge; the United States are also a very fascinating country, and I think I’ll have a good time there. The 2008 season will be tough, but we’ll be starting to prepare early. We hope we’ll have the chance to fight at the top; of course, testing will be vital, and we plan to start very soon…”.
